The Hazards of the Work

August 20, 2011 § Leave a comment

Today I celebrate my third “birthday”. While I”m definitely older than three, three years ago today I went into surgery to have my Thyroid removed due to a cancerous tumor. It’s a sobering thought to her the “C” word. While I did not receive my cancer diagnosis as the result of an on-the-job hazard or exposure, what we do puts us in a position to be exposed to a large number of hazards, from bloodbourne diseases to chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

One of the groups I’ve come across in the years since my diagnosis is the Firefighter Cancer Support Network.  This is an amazing group that provides assistance to firefighters and their families, regardless of the type of cancer yo uare diagnosed with. It also provides the ability for those of us in the service who are fighting the battle or who have beaten the disease to provide insight and support to those who are newly diagnosed.

While I hope that no one else ever has to go through the struggles of cancer treatment, I am a realist and know that in reality, every day a new patient will receive the news that they have cancer. If it is ever you or a family member, check otu the Firefighter Cancer Support Network for help!  Their website is: http://www.firefightercancersupport.org/

Call for Presentations – 2012 EMS Symposium

August 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

Each year the Virginia Office of EMS sponsors a training symposium that provides hundreds of hours of education over a five-day period. The courses focus on emergency services and emergency management issues and run the scale from field skills, operational issues, management training, legal issues, and a range of other topics.

The Virginia Office of EMS has opened a “Call for Presentations” for the 2012 Virginia EMS Symposium.   This year, the Symposium Committee will collect data on potential presentations electronically through the OEMS website.

If you or someone you know is interested in submitting an idea for one or more presentations, please visit the OEMS web site today!!  The
OEMS web site can be found at:   http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/oems/

On the right-hand side, in the “EMS News” box, click on the link titled “Call for Presentations for the 2012 Symposium”.

Remember that registration for this year’s Symposium has already opened!  Good luck!
